Outland (1981): Polydichloric Euthimal

Polydichloric Euthimal is an illegal drug, promoted as a “tranquilizer … company issue,” to alleviate the boredom of working at a mining colony on a moon of Jupiter. As Dr. Lazarus (Frances Sternhagen) explains to Marshall O’Niel (Sean Connery), “It’s an amphetamine. Strongest thing you ever saw. Makes you feel wonderful. You do 14 hours of work in 6 hours. It makes you work like a horse.” Yet a blood sample has been taken from an apparent victim of suicide and reveals traces of Polydichloric Euthimal. The drug has side effects as Lazarus explains, “It also makes you psychotic. It takes a while … 10, maybe 11 months. And then it fries your brain.”

Amphetamines are a class of psychostimulant drugs that produce increased wakefulness while decreasing fatigue and appetite. Specifically, amphetamines increase neurotransmitter activity in the brain through the release of dopamine and norepinephrine hormones. This activity also brings about an elevation of overall mood, a heightened libido, and a sense of euphoria.

As with any drug, repeated high-dose intake can lead to a variety of mental states including delusions, psychosis, and paranoia. In Outland, the effects of Polydichloric Euthimal build up and affect some more than others, suggesting some fundamental psychotic tendencies must be present that are exacerbated by the drug.
